Warren School Committee approves student trip, hears North Brookfield merger collapse
School Committee · Meeting of February 26, 2026
Warren School Committee hears North Brookfield reject four-year merger effort in four-to-one vote. Superintendent Steve Duff told the committee at the February 26 meeting that North Brookfield's school committee voted to remain a standalone district for 2026-27, ending talks Warren had pursued for roughly four years, with Finance Director Nikki Gonzalez credited for leading the financial analysis. The core dispute was a special education cost estimate: North Brookfield's consultant projected $1.2 million, while Warren's detailed calculation came in at approximately $450,000.
A committee member identified as Andrew noted the savings presentation to North Brookfield residents also omitted $2.15 million in Chapter 70 state aid that would have accompanied 134 transferring students, putting total projected savings at roughly $2.8 million rather than the $618,000 figure cited publicly. The committee also voted unanimously to send six Student Council members to a Cape Cod leadership conference March 4-6, and is pursuing a DOER grant of up to $250,000 for electric equipment, a stove replacement, and heat pumps. Warren's FY27 budget must be approved by March 30.
